Environmental coalition working to restore Florida Forever

Florida Forever was an incredible land-acquisition program that purchased natural lands and habitats for the purposes of conservation. The program received $300 million per year in funding and allowed the state to purchase 2.5 million acres since 1990.

The (Republican-controlled) Legislature discontinued funding for Florida Forever in 2009, and now a coalition of environmental groups wants to bring it back.

The coalition includes the Sierra Club, Florida Wildlife Federation, Audubon Florida, etc. See the full list of members here. It is called Florida’s Water & Land Legacy.

Now comes the fun part - collecting at least 676,811 valid petitions from Florida voters in time to get on the 2014 ballot. If the coalition is organized enough, getting onto the ballot is certainly achievable.
